If the public at large is generally aware of the occupation of the Channel islands by the Nazis, who prided themselves on occupying a portion of English territory, it is a very little-known fact - sometimes even to the present inhabitants - that bucolic Alderney housed a deportation camp. Similar to others in the harshness of the inmates' living conditions, it was special in that it was meant to gather men that were legally "non-deportable", i.e. Jews married to "Aryan" women. One of its largest contingents of inmates was made up of French Jews.
In connection with the current exhibition, the talk aims at describing the circumstances of its creation and functioning, as well as the conditions of life and the deported.
Gérard Hocmard est spécialiste de la Grande Bretagne et Délégué général de l'Association France-Grande Bretagne. Il a présidé l'Académie d'Orléans (Agriculture, Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts) de 2004 à 2010.
